Looking to save a little money? Consider a tile countertop! Large format porcelain tiles create a durable, low-maintenance countertop surface with almost no grout lines. You can use natural stone, ceramic, even glass tiles on your countertops.

The Countertop Process

How do I get new countertops? A simple six step process:

  1. Send us your countertop specs
  2. We'll give you a quote
  3. Order your countertops
  4. Template Appointment
  5. Fabrication
  6. Installation Appointment

How long does this whole process take? On average, about 3-4 weeks from the time you order your countertops to the time they are installed.

Keep reading for more specific details!

Step 1: Send us your countertop specs

Measurements accurate to the nearest inch

Legible cabinet drawings, blueprints, or hand-drawn line drawings are all acceptable.

Mark any cutouts for sinks, cooktops, bathtubs, etc.

Mark edges that need to be finished vs. edges against walls.

Color - What material, brand, and color do you want?

Quartz countertop color samples

Choose from one of our 100+ quartz colors priced by the square foot, starting at $69/sqft installed. . You only pay for the square footage used, not a full slab. See in-store samples.

You can also hand-select and place a hold on a full slab at one of our slab warehouses.

Note: slab holds expire after 2 weeks, countertops must be ordered before the hold expires to keep your selected slab.

Edge Profile - Which edge shape do you want?

Basic Edges are included at no extra charge:

  • Eased
  • Beveled
  • Crescent
  • Quarter Round
  • Half-Bullnose

Upgrade Edges

  • Full Bullnose
  • Ogee
  • Chiseled
  • Laminated
  • Waterfall Miter

Specify how many sinks you have and whether they are top-mount/self-rimming or undermount.

Do you want a backsplash made of your countertop material? How tall? Are there any cutouts for outlets or switches?

If the backsplash is 6” tall or shorter, we can plane it down it from 3cm thick to 2cm thick for an additional charge; please specify if you want backsplash planed or not.

Do you want us to remove your old countertops?

If you would like us to tear out and dispose of old countertops and backsplash material, tell us so we can quote it as a separate charge.

Tear out is not automatically included as many customers are starting with new cabinetry or tearing out their old countertops themselves. See full tear out details at the bottom of this page.

Step 2: We'll give you a quote

We will provide you with a written proposal listing your project details and pricing. Review and confirm details.

Step 3: Order your countertops

If the proposal details are correct and the pricing works for you, you can place your order for countertops by returning a signed copy of the proposal and making a payment. Our timeline is typically 3-4 weeks from order to install.

Step 4: Template Appointment

Within 1 week, the scheduler will call you to set up the template appointment. The template date is subject to the template-maker’s schedule and your availability but is usually scheduled appx. 2 weeks after you place your order.

Up until the day before your template appointment, you have the option to cancel your countertop or change details (color, edge profile) without penalty. After template, we cannot change details of the countertop.

At the template appointment, the following conditions must be met:

  • Remove backsplash. The template-maker needs to measure the countertop to the wall, and any unevenness or curve in the wall. We can remove the backsplash if you paid for tear-out, but we are not responsible for drywall or wall repair.
  • The decision maker must be on site. This person is required to sign off all aspects of the project including design (color), edge, faucet holes, and overhangs. Approximate duration is 2 hours.
  • If possible, remove old countertops, unless you have purchased countertop removal and disposal from Tile Lines.
  • Clear off the cabinet and/or countertop surfaces.
  • Cabinets must be completely installed including panels and level +/- 1/8”.
  • Have plumbing fixtures on site. This includes sinks, faucets, etc. If you have purchased sink(s) from Tile Lines, they should be picked up from Tile Lines beforehand to be on site for the template. Farm style sinks must be installed in cabinets by the template. Plumbing spec sheets will not be accepted; physical items must be on site.

After template

After template we will contact you if the measurements are significantly different from the initial estimate.

If it's lower, we will refund the difference.

If it’s higher, you have the option to pay the balance and move forward with fabrication, or to cancel your project for a refund less the template fee of $325 + tax.

Step 5: Fabrication

The digital template will be plugged into the CNC machines to cut your countertops. This can take 1-2 weeks depending on the complexity of your project and other projects in the queue.

Step 6: Installation Appointment

The scheduler will set up the installation appointment with you before the template but may need to reschedule if complications arise at or after the template appointment.

Approximate duration is 3 – 8 hours depending on the size & access of your project.

At the installation appointment, the following conditions must be met:

  • The decision maker must be on site. This person is required to sign off on the work completed.
  • Clear off the cabinet and/or countertops as well as the entryway to the work space.
  • Empty lower cabinets & remove top drawers.
  • The day prior, please remove countertops, backsplashes, & sills if we are not contracted to do so.
  • Move range.
  • Move fridge or other large obstacles out of work area as needed.
  • Keep pets & children clear of the work area.

Post-Installation Notes

After Countertop Install – Please wait 24 hours...

  • To reconnect plumbing.
  • Before wiping down any surface at seams or where the countertop or backsplash meets the wall.
  • To complete touch up paint.

All of our quartz products are covered by a 15-year residential manufacturer’s warranty against defects. Ask us for details or visit the manufacturer’s website to register for your warranty.

Our fabricators warrant their work for as long as you’re in the house with the product. This includes but is not limited to countertop seams, undermount sink adhesive, etc.

Tile Lines is your advocate for countertop-related issues. If you have a warranty claim, maintenance concern, or other post-install issue, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Tear-Out/Removal of Old Countertops

If you wish to keep your old counters for as long as possible, we recommend you remove them a few days before your installation appointment, not the day before or the day of the installation appointment. This gives you time to repair any damage to the cabinets caused during tear out.

We will need the old countertops removed before template if:

  • You have large garden windows or window extensions. We need to see what is under there to confirm supports.
  • You are installing a farm sink or new cabinets. See below.

We cannot be contracted to remove your old countertops if:

  • You’re installing a farm sink in old cabinets. You must tear out old countertops and install the farm sink in the cabinets before the template appointment; we cannot complete this work for you.
  • You are getting new cabinets. The old countertops and cabinets must be removed, and the new cabinets must be installed before the template.

We recommend hiring a handyman to handle tear out if you are unable to remove countertops yourself and we cannot tear them out for you.

If you purchased tear-out from Tile Lines…

Old backsplash must be removed prior to template. We can remove the backsplash, but we are not responsible for drywall or wall repair.

We typically do tear-out of old countertops the day of or the day before the installation appointment, depending on jobsite location and schedule. The scheduler will arrange this with you beforehand.

You must disconnect plumbing, gas, and electric devices prior to tear-out. This includes sinks, faucets, cooktops, ranges, etc.

Appliances touching the countertops must be moved before tear-out; including but not limited to refrigerators, stoves, and cooktops.

We can try to salvage old sinks at your request, but we cannot guarantee that they will not be damaged in the tear out process. If you wish to re-use your old sink, you must remove it and clean off any old adhesive before template. We do not recommend this; it is better to have a new sink on hand for template and installation.
